How to Choose the Right Window Coverings

If you're in the market for some new window coverings, be sure to choose a style that is best suited for your needs. In order to do this, ask yourself these questions:

1. What functional purpose will the blinds serve? ie. Do you require privacy? Do you wish to block light?

2. How important is energy efficiency? Certain styles of window coverings will help to insulate from the cold of winter, and diffuse light in the summer to reduce heat from the sun.

3. Do you wish to dress your windows, or simply cover them? In other words, would you like your window coverings to make a statement, or do you require a more neutral look so as not to deter focus from the surrounding room?

4. Colour - Even white can come in a variety of shades - be sure to bring sample fabrics into your home to test in the room's lighting to ensure the right choice.

5. Last consideration - budget. Cost should not be a determining factor when it comes to style. There is a wide selection of options available for any budget. While cost may help to determine some of the bells and whistles, be sure to choose what's right for you, and the room.

One of the reasons that people, especially families, seem to get sick, and stay sick in the winter months is due to the air quality in your own house. By keeping the house closed up tight for winter, you're keeping the heat in, but you're also keeping in everything else in the air. On a beautiful spring-like day like today, it's a great idea to open your windows, even if just for 15 minutes, to allow the air to circulate through the home.

This is also a Home Staging tip that I give to clients - when listing your home for sale, be sure to open you windows for 5 minutes every day to allow the stale air to be released. This will help to ensure that any stale odours can escape before potential buyers come through.
