Top Designer Picks for Home Decorating "Must-Haves"

When you’re planning a room, it’s easy to forget the details. In order to complete the look of a room, and make it feel like your own, you need to invest in some of the finishing touch pieces to add that final design layer. This is where we find a lot of our design clients get stumped, unsure of what to get, or how to put it all together, so we’ve put together a list of our best “must-haves” for every home!

Some key elements to completing the look in your home:

Decorative pillows – you can never have too many of these! It’s fun to change them up by season, with warmer colours in the winter, and more vibrant colours in the spring and summer. Don’t be afraid to add a little bling to a room, such as an elegant bedroom, with some jewels on your pillows. And one thing that we absolutely love to do is mix patterns for a more layered look.

Elvie Indoor/Outdoor Lumbar Pillow by August Grove (Wayfair.ca)
Luanna Synthetic Throw Pillow by House of Hampton (Wayfair.ca)

Comfy Throws – these serve double duty at a great accent piece draped over a chair, sofa, or bed, and are perfect for curling up with on a cold night. They’re also a perfect way to add a subtle hint of colour to a room!

Area Rugs – especially in a gathering room, area rugs will help to “ground” the room and pull the conversational seating together. For larger rooms, area rugs can help to break up the space to create two distinct areas, with separate purposes, within a room. Ensure that the area rug is large enough to extend at least slightly under each piece of furniture in the room, to avoid it “floating” in the room.

Rugs can also be placed in front of a fireplace to create a cozy place to cuddle up in the winter, while adding some luxury to the space.

Wall Art – if you have a fear of commitment to art, get over it! And no, don’t try to tell me that you don’t want to put holes in your wall – that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do! If you really dislike the holes, you can explore the option of the 3M Command Hooks and Strips. Other artwork hanging solutions can be found in our January Blog “Hang Artwork Like a Pro”. Wall art can range from framed paintings and pictures, to canvases, to metal wall sculptures, mirrors, decorative clocks, and whatever else you want to display.

Heck, you can even hang small accent furniture pieces or accessories on the wall if you want to! Adding a variety of styles of wall accessories will add texture to a room, and help to really complete the space by filling the eye-level areas for a cohesive look and feel.

Corner items – we all have that empty corner in a room in our house, and clients are often perplexed with what to do with these areas. They’re often considered fairly non-functional space, though an attractive shelf could fix this.

But what’s to say that every space needs to be functional, can’t it just be pretty? Create a decorative vignette with a large vase, plant, or other floral display.

Or add some fun boxes or trunks, stacked to add some height.

An old wooden ladder can work great in a corner on it’s own, or used to hang magazines, towels, plants, or other display items.

Large Mirror – These are a great way to reflect light to brighten a room, add the illusion of space, and fill a decorative need in a room, whether hung or leaning on a wall.

Montrose Mirror by Howard Elliott (Wayfair.ca)

Statement piece – there are really no rules to a statement piece. As indicated in its name, it’s intended to make a statement, and create an impact for anyone that enters the room. This could be achieved by its size, colours, historical significance, or simply its overall uniqueness. It should be eye-catching, and most importantly, something that you absolutely love. It’s not necessary for every room or home to have a statement piece, but it adds a great element to a room, in addition to creating conversation amongst your guests.

When designing your room, don’t be afraid to add personal elements, and items that make you smile, for whatever reason, to create a room that you’ll be sure to love.

Setting The Trend for 2010 - BTSH Around The House Tip of the Week

Lots of fun and exciting trends emerge for 2010. Some began their appearance first in 2009, but we will see them reach a new level in 2010. Get ready for more “green” products, both in colour and eco-awareness, as well as a break from the modern contemporary to add some warmth, coziness, and colour to the traditional contemporary style. Colours will reflect some retro appeal, and appear big and bold (more on this in next week’s ATH article). As well, accent walls make a grand return, with lots of different styles and textures explored. The big theme for 2010 will be mixing it up. Forget the rules you knew when it came to decorating, and feel free to be creative and expressive in colours, patterns, and styles.

Accent Walls
While accent walls have been around for a while, 2010 you will see lots of different styles and textures in accent walls. While a simple bold colour can still be seen as a great accent, other materials such as wallpaper, which began its return in 2009, will be much more prominent. Look for bold patterns, as well as paintable wallpapers that add even more texture to a room. Accent walls will also feature textures such as grasscloth in various styles and patterns, and wainscoting, as seen in the image to right.

Textures
Not limited simply to the walls, textures will add a sense of comfort to a room. Layer and mix various fabrics such as wool, velvet, organic fabrics, furs, and even leathers. Also, as wallpaper makes it’s big comeback look for wallpapered ceilings to add texture to any room.

Bold Mix of Patterns
Another way to add texture will be through patterns. Forget symmetry. Who says you can only have one pattern in a room? Mix and match various patterns, such as stripes with paisleys and flowers with checkers. Have fun with patterns in your walls, textiles, and accent pieces.

Mix High with Low
If there is one great thing that emerged from our most recent recession, it’s the importance of “thrifty” living and sustainability. 2010 will feature a great deal of re-purposing, keeping with the eco-friendly theme, as well as adding character. To avoid looking like a thrift-store junkie, mix select high-end pieces with the classic refurbished pieces. Again, showcasing the retro theme, and mixing the old with the new.

Original Art
Another trend that the recession inspired was do-it-yourself artwork. While I love to support local emerging artists, I also appreciate the uniqueness and originality of this new art trend. Consider painting a wall with chalk board paint to allow the freedom to change up quotes and images as often as you like. Encourage your guests to contribute to the masterpiece. Or purchase word decals to create a phrase to reflect your home’s style and your personality. Various sites online to order from.

2009 Holiday Decorating Trends - BTSH Around The House Tip of the Week

You may have noticed that the stores have their holiday decorations out (in fact, I think they jumped the gun on them this year and had them out before Halloween). Well now they are even playing Christmas music too, so you know what that means—it’s time to spruce up your home for holidays. Everyone has their classic, traditional pieces that are put out year over year, but it’s nice to keep your décor fresh and exciting, so this year I have put together some suggestions for getting your home Christmas Trendy.

Keep It Natural
The “green” theme has been brought to holiday decorating by bringing much of nature indoors this year. Look for boughs, holly, sprigs, berries, and pinecones for a natural , organic look. Burlap has also made an incredible appearance this season, and can be seen as stylish tree skirts, ornaments, gift bags, and more!

Consider Alternatives to the Traditional “Pine”
Pine has always been first choice for garland, wreaths, and planters. This year, consider changing it up with some Eucalyptus or Fir, both of which will fill the room with a beautiful aroma. Another great alternative to pine is feathers, which are available in a variety of styles and colours this year, from wreaths, to garland, and even pillows.

KISS—Keep It Simple Silly
Keep things understated this season, and avoid over-decorating. Remember to follow this rule - for every holiday decoration you set out, a non-seasonal item should be removed and packed away until after the holidays.

Colour Trends
The most popular colour this season is the colour of snow—a nice, crisp white. If you are looking to add some colour, keep it monochromatic. Staying within the same colour family will keep it simple and understated. Popular non-traditional colours this year are blues and purples. Silver once again remains strong, and is found to be especially glittery this season.

Other Tips
- Compliment your existing décor—be sure that whatever you choose works well with your everyday furnishings and colours. Don’t be afraid to pack away some items until after the holidays.

- Give your existing “traditional” pieces a facelift with a little paint—spray paint traditional items such as garland and pinecones for a modern day twist on an old classic.

- Make use of lights and candles to give your home that warm touch. Choose a seasonally scented candle for added effect, such as cinnamon spice, gingerbread, or cedar.

- Keeping with the natural theme, and as a way of doing your part for the environment, visit your local thrift shops for some vintage bulbs and wreaths, and have fun mixing the old with the new.
